STEP Program

North Carolina Small Town Economic Prosperity (STEP) Grant Program

MISSION: To support small town revitalization as a critical element ofNorth Carolina’s public policy agenda.

ABOUT: The North Carolina Small Towns Economic Prosperity program brings a comprehensive revitalization effort to communities, especially those challenged by economic hardships due to changes in the economy and or/or natural disasters. NC STEP is designed for municipalities with fewer than 10,000 people, either within the state’s 85 rural counties or within urban counties defined as economically distressed by the N.C. Department of Commerce.

NC STEP is also designed as a three-year demonstration that incorporates leadership training, technical assistance, grants, networking and more. TheRuralCenter will document the progress on an ongoing basis, reporting to the North Carolina General Assembly, which funded the program; the many state, federal and nonprofit agencies providing assistance; the communities themselves; and the other individuals and organizations interested in its outcome.
